Fun Facts about Jericho, Arkansas

Somehow, when I read Megan's post about Jericho, Arkansas, I just knew what the town's demographics would turn out to be.

UPDATE: Megan commenter Michael Tinkler pointed to an AP story that addressed a question lingering in the back of my mind: why does a town of 184 residents and a median family income of $26K have a 7-man police force? How can they afford it?

Answer: "Sheriff's deputies patrolled Jericho until the 1990s, when the city received [Clinton-era federal] grant money to start its own police force, Martin said."

Is there no end to the mischief?

Yeah, not a hard guess on that respect.

So was the fire chief one of the 7.482 whites in Jericho?

"It was anger over traffic tickets that brought Payne to city hall last week, said his lawyer, Randy Fishman.... Payne, 39, returned to court to vent his anger to Judge Tonya Alexander, Fishman said.

...[A]n argument between Payne and the seven police officers who attended the hearing apparently escalated to a scuffle, ending when an officer shot Payne from behind.

[The county investigator] declined to name the officer who shot Payne. It's unclear if the officer has been disciplined.

Prosecutor Lindsey Fairley said Thursday that he didn't plan to file any felony charges against the officer or Payne. Fairley, reached at his home, said Payne could face a misdemeanor charge stemming from the scuffle, but that would be up to the city's judge. He said he didn't remember the name of the officer who fired the shot."

I actually thought it was an inbred hillbilly town. It was quite surprising to see that it's overwhelmingly minority.

Eumaios, do you have a blog? If so, I'd like to take a gander.

Elusive Wapiti,

Under this pseudonym, not yet. I'm still trying to digest what I've learned in the last month or so. It is my plan to begin blogging on the ramifications of Game and HBD for married men and fathers, soon.

Innocence like yours gives me hope.

I realize it is uncouth to post several times, uninterrupted, but HOLY crap:

"At last check Payne was in good condition at the MED and the officer who was shot was doing fine."

Eumaios said...

I should compound my uncouthness by adding that the "officer who was shot" was struck in the fingertip. The firechiefperson got evac-ed to a serious hospital.
