Gun Culture

When I enrolled my wife in a CCW course, I wasn’t seeking a culturally broadening experience.  It just so happened that during the week she could do it, the only class I could find with open seats was also the least expensive.

The instructor was a heavy-set, foul-mouthed ex-Marine with personal issues right out of a bad country-music piece.  There were seven people in the class, four of whom were women.  Two of the women were black.  One of the black women worked in what is now known as “exotic dancing.”

Hey, it takes all kinds!

As has been widely reported, women are making an ever greater percentage of participants in the shooting sports, and among CCW holders in particular.  Locally, blacks seem to surprisingly well-represented among CCW applicants.

CCW classes are regularly conducted at the public range at which I shoot.  The class was (perhaps) breaking for lunch one Saturday while I was there, and filed past the rifle range from the handgun range.  A fair number of blacks, if not a majority.  They got a long look at us, the exclusively white riflemen, every man of us cradling an AR-15.

I’m thinking we made a good impression.

Bah, real men shoot 7.62x54r, not that .223 stuff that NATO sissies shoot.

riiiight. Because rifle technology hasn't progressed any since Zsarist Russia, so why should your ammo?

Seriously, though, I've been thinking about a rifle with a little better reach than .223, but without the pain of a .30-06. Any recommendations?

Better reach than 600M? Can you even see that far? Why buy capability that you will never be able to use?

But if you must, anything in 30 cal will give you good service. My fave is 7.62x51 (aka .308). It is reliable, comes in lots of different loads and styles of rifle and is easy to find. Also, it is still a military standard, so if SHTF, you will still have an assured supply.

Actually, the 7.62x54r is a nice round (between the .308 and the .30-06). And with a Mosin Nagant going for about 100, a good bargain for those without the means (or for stocking up on several of the same rifles for parts or family). Does not kick to harshly. ATI make a Monte Carlo stock that can upgrade the look and feel of the M-N quite a bit. The price on ammo is fairly equivalent to .308 and .30-06.

Doc, a .308 through a sturdy rifle has very little kick. E.G., an M1A (.308) feels a lot better than a bolt action .30-06 IMO.

The Prof is very correct about .308 availability.

That is what I would go with if you are choosing just one.

The .30-06 can have a lot more variety in bullet, if you wish to reload.

Doc,

I have a crush on the Ruger Gunsite Scout (would like to get one), if you are in to that sort of thing.

Oh hell, without a magnifier I can't see 100m, let alone 600m. But my experience thus far makes me skeptical that that the .223 is meaningfully effective at 600m, at least fired out of an M4, magnifier or no.

It is effective at that range, from an M-4. Using 62gr service ammo. It is my job to know this.

In addition to the mutiple Mosin-Nagants (they seem to multiply), I also have a PSL-54C. It's sort of an oversized AK-47 that was used by Soviet snipers out to a range of 600 meters or so (check their doctrine vs. the US), Very nice to shoot.

And don't forget the comparison of the AK-47/AR-15/Mosin-Nagant: http://www.mouseguns.com/compare.htm

also, with the purchase of any military surplus, you run the risk of buying a gun that is no longer in spec and is not going to perform as advertized. Those early rifles will have been used, and abused and put away wet more than once. They used corrosive primers and were maintained by conscripts. You can minimize your risk if you have a personal gunsmith in your pocket when you select one.

Where I shoot at Quantico, you can no longer shoot 7.62x54R. If you have access to private land, this won't be a problem.
